My journey is teaching me so much about myself, but also about those around me. There are so many words that we use to define ourselves—single, old, young, fat, thin—as if we’re walking around wearing labels that can be checked with one quick tug of the collar.
It would be great if we never had to wear any labels!
But there are times when we have to figure out who we are in order to share that knowledge with others. It took me a long time to figure out how this journey means to me into one little title.
After quite a few crumpled up pieces of paper, some time spent gazing into a mirror, and several hours of journal work, I finally found it: Single Wide Female.
Not so convinced? I think most people think of wide as an insult. But I don’t. I’m a proud single wide female.
It’s not the girth of my hips. It’s my wide open state of my mind. I am keen to invite in life and whatever comes next. I think that too often we spend our time closed up tight.
I’ve spent so much of my time worried about fitting in—fitting in with friends, fitting into bathing suits, fitting into airplane seats.
No matter what size, I think all women should be able to live wide.
I only hope I can convey that passion on this blog. It’s time to open up, instead of fitting in. Time to widen our horizons instead of limiting them. And time to greet every moment with a wide open heart.
Love,
Sammy
